The form of the treehouse cabin comes from the shape of a walnut. With the eight asymmetric posts and the unusual shape, the treehouse is exceptional. This project was realized for a family with children. The treehouse serves as a room for rest and relaxation as well as a play ground for the kids and as a guestroom. The treehouse is an impressive sight at eveningtime and at night when the lighting is switched on. The weight of the terrace is carried by the walnut-tree by strong high-grade steel cables and and heavy-duty textile belts that do not harm the branches. The interior is furnished with a very spacious lying area and a bench opposite. Beneath the lying area and the bench there are drawers. The treehouse is generously fitted with glazing on all sides and a bended dormer window.

Over the centuries, architects have small buildings used to experiment with limited areas of form, scale and volume but also to experiment with materials and details. The materials research focuses on architects, in the absence of well-equipped research laboratories, monitor potential of existing products in particular exploring the possibilities of misuse of materials.
Plastic pipes have inspired us to design a special pavilion in which this material is no longer seen as a drain but as a hollow block. The material is examined for its spatial characteristics and surpasses its standard use as a medium transport. Content and capacity are no longer the most important dimensions. Transparency in the longitudinal direction and the thick wall in the transverse direction define the space. By parallel stacking of the tubes as building blocks creates a mass extending from four sides when closed presents but from the front side seen by the piercing glance shows. By erosion of the mass is a special space that is provided from the ends of light.
Not only spatial experience, but also aspects such as transparency, texture, arrangement and rhythm of diameters, wall thickness and tangent fascinate the viewer.

The main question that led the development of the project of this 5000 sq ft (500 m²) building was how to conciliate a space to hold exhibitions of contemporary art, with the necessary large wall area, high ceilings and natural light, all in a very compact volume. The infra-structure [circulation and services] is concentrated in a lateral strip which serves the exhibition room and the two administrative rooms, which are imbricated in a way that allows the entrance of zenithal light to every space. Built with reinforced concrete, all the planes that create the spaces – walls, floors or inclined planes, with a simple geometry, have the same thickness:15 cm.

Steam bending is a traditional process steeped in history and culture. It was once a vital practice, paramount to the production of weapons, tools and water vessels, on which peoples livelihoods depended. Sadly, with the advance of technology this practice has been replaced and become less common. With little time and a lot of practice, I have developed my own way of using steam, which has reinvented this traditional process and brought it into the 21st century. With the new tools and the methods Ive developed, I can twist and bend wood as freely as you use a pencil for drawing. Having such a good understanding of the material and the process ensures there are no restrictions on my creativity; believing anything can be achieved, is extraordinarily liberating. Beyond this, steam bending is a low energy and ecological method of manipulating wood. There are no nasty glues and very low levels of wastage.

Michael Salvador “is a technical scientific illustrator with a creative slant”. Those are his own words to describe himself.  He’s graduated from Sheridan’s College Bachelor of Applies Arts (illustration). These graphic works are excellent, by their dynamic strength at the paper. The sober expression of the line and the remixed junction of black and white, complements totally the paper’s white background.

Within the framework of the municipal art organisation ‘Beyond’ various international artists will be invited to stay and work for a limited period of time in the newly-built city extension, Leidsche Rijn. Their task will be to observe and react to the growing and rapidly changing place from various perspectives. The accommodation for these artists itself, a mobile studio is part of the municipal art programme. The small building will change ist location several times during the course of the planned activities. The simple space doesn’t aim at being a piece of art in itself, but mainly offers a practical and affordable place to stay. Rather than minimizing size and weight as one would expect from a mobile home, the aim of the design was to maximise its dimensions and functionality. Despite its mobility the building is big, robust and durable. It consists of one long space that can be subdivided in different interior and exterior spaces. It’s a house to be used in many ways: as a hotelroom, a studio or a hospitable dwelling with a big table, plenty of daylight and as much privacy as one needs. The construction of the object is simple: walls, floor and roof have entirely been made of solid, laminated sheets of European softwood, stabilized by two steel frames. The object is stable enough to be lifted and transported in one piece, sturdy, heavy and environmentally sound. Its dimensions permit transportation on public roads. The timber panels are covered with additional thermal insulation and a laminated timber rainscreen. Within a few days the object was assembled on site. During transportation and also later, if the guest so desires, the object can be completely closed up, just lit from above. When the large shutters are opened the introverted house gets a completely different character. Then large parts of the elevations turn into terraces, ramps and podia. The timber interior then becomes part of its surrounding and the artist presents him/herself and his/her work to the city. The project was developed collaboratively with the Rotterdam based artists BikvanderPol.

3XNs transformational renovation of a historic and listed ‘Christianshavn’ warehouse has resulted in a spectacular new environment for the Copenhagen branch. The waterfront offices on Strandgade dates from 1763 and was originally used for grain storage. The studio’s interior loft design is a perfect response to the challenges of a listed building. As there is limited light entering from the upper levels, a 40 meter long and 4 meter wide light ceiling was installed to simulate natural daylight – and which can be adjusted to provide cold or warm light. The light is reflected in the white surfaces and the custom made aluminum floor. The walls are constructed with sound absorbing plaster so that the noise levels are kept low regardless of the open plan. The studio is designed as a large open loft, with two levels – the second level being used for meeting facilities. The meeting rooms are the only partitioned areas within the office but have an open feel to them through use of glass walls. The open environment contributes to a creative and interactive space, where sharing of knowledge and interconnectivity amongst the studio’s architect’s comes naturally.

This small apartment in Amsterdam, NL (45 m2) is completely renovated because of foundation repair. In it’s new layout all the functions of the house are placed in two wall units. Entrance hall, wardrobe and kitchen equipment are hidden behind a pinewood wall. On the opposite a second wooden wall of the same material is placed. This wall integrated a bench, fireplace and storage. Floor, ceiling and walls are all white. A custom designed table and bench, together with the fireplace are anthracite gray. The simplicity of the design and choice of materials give this apartment lots of space within the limited area.

This is a highly exclusive private home located in a villa region of Vienna. The surrounding environment is characterized by a garden which resembles a park with a wide arrangement of aged trees. The villa consists of two stacked, slightly shifted, elements. The lower of which, mainly built into the hill, builds the base and only opens up to the south. The upper element, placed on top of the base, sticks out far, through which a wide covered open space is achieved. The living and sleeping areas are found in the upper element. Living area, dining area and library are transparent and designed in an open style, which however, can be divided into separate elements through room dividers if one desires so. The lower element contains the recreation area including a swimming pool, spa and lounge.
